Production History
Big Bad Wolves was initially conceived as a short sketch
entitled Quentin Tarantino's Little Red Riding Hood written
by Chris Kerr and posted to a New Zealand internet forum in
November of 2004. The original sketch inspired producer Craig Parkes to
approach Chris about turning it into a short film. ![]()
With Chris's agreement Craig handed the sketch over to friend and collaborator Rajneel Singh, who jumped at the chance to fill the role of writer/director. By February of 2005 a script had been written incorporating the sketch's clever dialogue and the films dark yet hilarious fantasy imagery. At this point co-producer and art director Annamarie Connors came on board as a key creative on the project.
Enthusiasm for the script and it's full potential saw the project increase in scale and ambition as the cast and crew where assembled - what was initially invisioned as no budget short to be made with a few friends had suddenly enlisted an amazing DOP in Marc Mateo, a hugely talented volunteer cast and crew thus creating production values far and away beyond what would be expect on the meagre budget (funded entirely by the producers and their friends and families).Photograpy for Big Bad Wolves began in April 2005 and was completed in July of 2005. The shoot was spread across 5 days on 4 weekends, and was shot entirely on locations in Auckland, New Zealand. See pictures from the shoot in the gallery.
Post-production was put on hold from July until December while looking for post production funding.
Post-production proper was started in early 2006 thanks to the
tireless efforts and generosity of Afterglow Films
and offline editors Jason Pengelly and Andy McGrath. Composer
Thomas Goss was brought on board the project t
o create an
amazing score.
The film received an amazing colour grade thanks to Images Post and had a sneak peak world premiere in July 2006 at the Wellington Fringe Film Festival, a full year after completion of principal photography, but the film still needed a tweak in the sound mix.
A final pass at a sound mix saw the film completed in September 2006.
As a self funded short film Big Bad Wolves could not have been completed without the help of a multitude of volunteers, both industry professionals and film enthusiasts, and the producers wish to offer their heartfelt thanks and applause to everyone who made the film possible.
